How does an SSL certificate work?

1
The browser connects to the webserver (website) secured by an SSL certificate (https). The browser asks the server to identify itself.
2
The server sends a copy of its SSL certificate including the server’s public key.
3
The browser checks the root certificate in a list of certified issuers (CAs) and that the certificate has not expired or been revoked and that the current domain is one of the domains allowed by the certificate. If the browser trusts the certificate, it creates, encrypts, and sends a symmetric session key using the server’s public key.
4
he server decrypts the symmetric session key using its private key and sends an encrypted acknowledgment with the session key to start an encrypted session.

FAQ

What is an SSL Certificate?

An SSL Certificate is a digital certificate that is issued for a domain by the Certificate Authority. You must purchase an SSL Certificate and then go through a verification process to be issued with the certificate. This verification is conducted by the Certificate Authority.

Why should I purchase an SSL Certificate for my domain name?

Getting an SSL Certificate has two major advantages:
– It encrypts the information sent from your user’s browser to your website
– It authenticates your website’s identity

By doing this, an SSL Certificate protects your customers and in turn, increases their trust in your business and your website. This is important if your website requires users to log in using passwords or sensitive information like credit card information.

Does the SSL Certificate work on all browsers?

Yes, all SSL Certificates are compatible with all major and popular browsers active today.

Do I need any technical knowledge to set up an SSL Security Certificate for my domain name?

While it isn’t difficult to install an SSL certificate, you need to follow a series of steps. More information on how to install it can be found on our Knowledge Base.

Is upgrading my SSL Certificate possible?

No, we don’t support any upgrade or downgrade on SSL Certificates at the moment. If you would like to change your SSL certificate, you should order a new one.
